Is This Too Hot?

We moved in to our new house in June. Well, I say we, but really it was James. The kids and I didn't move in to it until the end of August. The house had been empty for six months before we moved in to it. So, you can imagine that the owner shut down all utilities. James left to go to Tucson in July and when we got home last week he informed me that he had neglected to light the pilot on the hot water heater but that it should be just fine until he gets home in mid September. Now, I would like you to imagine that your hot water heater is not working and see if you think that is fine? I have to say that I was slightly annoyed with him. I just knew that the kids and I would not be able to shower and how on earth would I get my clothes and dishes clean without hot water?! We have been home for 9 days now and the hot water heater is still not on. However, our water is so hot that it steams up the bathroom and can burn. How is this happening? Did it really get lit and both of us are mistaken? No! It has been so hot here that the water that is sitting in the hot water heater is near to scalding! Do we have cold water to offset it? No! It is too hot here to have cold water unless it has been sitting in your fridge for some time, certainly no the pipes! I think this is too hot!!!!!

Are you sure its not on? I can't possibly get hotter than the air temp without an external source. Call your home teacher to come over and check it out.

Hiroko, it is not warm enough to heat it up that much during those months. November is when we start moving down in to the 90s. :)

Gordon, I am sure it is off. However, seeing as how we get up in to the 120's I think it might be hot enough outside. But then, really, what do I know! lol I will have James check it when he gets home next week. I don't even know if we have a home teacher! (we just moved in).

Temaire, it has to be on, otherwise, the hot temp would be as hot as the cold temp. No difference. Really. Think about it. ;) (What would make the hot water steaming but not the cold water...the source is the same, but the hot goes throught the hot water heater. Gordon and I are right....you are mistaken! lol James (or someone) did it....do do do do, do do do do (music from twilight zone) lol Love you!! Mom :)

and just so you know, I don't have a hot water heater at all!! therefore, the vast majority of southeast asia and latin america don't have to imagine life with no water heater...we live it daily :) Also, my water is heated by the sun and my water is stored in a tub on my roof where the sun beats on it all day long...it's still very cold! i'm with your mom and that other chap...your water heater is on...at the end of the day it's probably an electric heater and not gas hahaha

Okay, I think that when I went out to light it (after talking to James) I must have been successful (who knew?) and that is why the water is hot. However, Scott, we do not have cold water. During the summer months (all 9 of them) it is so hot outside, and our water comes from the Colorado river, that the water is warm. There is no coolness to it at all. So, we have warm water and hot water.

I was believing you somewhat ;) because when we first moved into the apartment the pilot light was out on our water heater and we had to shower for a day or two without it lit and it actually wasn't bad, the water was warm enough to shower and it not be uncomfortable. We were actually thinking for a minute to just not light it, but then decided it's not worth saving the $30 a year. lol

I love this post! I can see how that can happen. It's so sad when my little guys turn on the cold water to wash their hands after going potty and they say "HOT HOT!!"
